Portrait Commissions

Oil Portraits:

The first step in commissioning a portrait is for Rick and the client to discuss the project via phone or email.  In this discussion, general information about what the client desires is explored.  Approximate size and complexity is determined, and a preliminary quote is provided.  Rick’s painting method is to paint from photos, avoiding time-consuming client sittings and travel.  For oil portraits, Rick will come to the client’s home for a meeting to further discuss details such as background, attire and pose.  Once all details are determined, the final commission price will be quoted. Photography will be completed at this time or scheduled for a later date if necessary.

Graphite Portraits:

As with oil portraits, a conversation between Rick and the client starts the process.  Unlike oil portraits, however, the details of the commission can usually be finalized over the phone or email, and photos are typically provided by the client.  During the initial conversation, the details of the portrait are determined, and an approximate quote is given.  After the client’s photos are received and agreed upon, a final commission fee is quoted.

Fees:

Portrait commissions range in price from a few hundred dollars for a simple graphite portrait to $15,000 or more for a large full-figure oil portrait.  Fees vary according to factors such as size and complexity.  A 40% deposit is customary upon approval of portrait commissions.  The remaining portion of the fee is due upon delivery and approval of the final work.  The typical portrait is delivered within three months of the date of commission. Portraits come with a guarantee of satisfaction.  If for any reason the client is not satisfied with the portrait, a full refund will be made.
