The painting displays a nostalgic view of rural life in the 1950s. Emotions ranging from excitement and bravado to fear and uncertainty are depicted in the paintings characters. In contrast to the high energy of the ice skating, a horse-drawn sleigh unhurriedly sweeps by, heading for home. Long shadows give notice to the coming twilight, marking the end of the day’s skating on this wintry holiday. It’s then that each character’s thoughts turn to hot chocolate and a warm hearth.

A Measure of Love gives the viewer a glimpse into a busy Moravian kitchen in the late 1800s. With the fire glowing, ready to receive the next kettle, the women busily work in harmony, turning an everyday occurrence into something special. Their daily task is made lighter by the stories they share and the bonds of friendship that unite them. One can almost smell the roasted corn and freshly baked bread and cookies. Hand-picked apples await their turn in the kettle. Drawn to the kitchen by the delicious aroma and laughter, a small child plays with wooden spoons that are all too near the flour that dots her nose. It is in this setting that she is taught how to cook using time-honored recipes and ingredients, with an emphasis on the most important ingredient of all…a measure of love.

Christmas Concert at Old Salem takes place inside a home in Old Salem during the Christmas season. A blanket of freshly fallen snow outside helps set the mood that’s just right for the evening. The radiance from a fireplace glows upon the faces of the young musicians and their instruments as they play under a traditional Moravian star. Moravian children study their music lessons all year long, specifically for holiday and other traditional celebrations. Each child serenades the audience with their own tender chords played in praise to God.

Dad and his kids are headed home with a Christmas tree specially chosen from the abundant evergreen forest near their home in the mountains. The church shown is Pine Grove Methodist in Wytheville, Virginia. There was a time when this winter scene was commonplace, but the practice has largely given way to a more convenient means, the local tree lot. Folks who grew up in rural areas during this bygone era still enjoy fond memories of this yearly ritual.

An 18th century Moravian blacksmith works in the bitter cold on a winter’s day in Old Salem. A mare, soon to be shod, and its foal, stand feeding nearby. Tradesmen, merchants and settlers in this pioneering community accepted the extreme hardships that winter brought. With stern resolve, and of their own volition, each worked dutifully for the good of all.

The cold night has fallen, muting the wilderness outdoors under winter’s serene hush. It is late December in the mid-18th century at Old Salem. Inside the house there is warmth, and near the glowing protection of a fireplace sit a young mother and her two small children. The mother reads aloud the Christmas story from the second chapter of Luke just before bedtime. The children listen, knowing intuitively, that this is the most wonderful story the Bible has to tell.
